| | King's College Choir - Once In Royal David's City | ] | and can spare the prayers, good vibes, happy thoughts, serene meditations and/or cosmic contemplations, my cousin Sheryl is going into surgery to have some lumps removed from her breasts so they can be biopsied. it sounds like her doctors are already pretty sure she's going to be undergoing chemo and/or radiation afterwards... Also, a friend of ours (and director of the St. John's United Methodist Handbell Choir) George Frock is going in for gall bladder surgery the same day, so please send some good vibration his way as well...
i know they both need to be tended to as soon as possible, but damn, surgery a week before Christmas... suckage major. |

| | "State of Independence" - Jon & Vangelis | ] | upon seeing the old Alicia Silverstone nude PETA ad - "I'm Alicia Silverstone and I'm a vegetarian." - "Alicia, I want to fuck you, not go out to dinner with you."
"Dracula" (1931, Spanish version) - It is indeed better than the Bela Lugosi version, as far as I'm concerned. For some reason, Tod Browning muted the sex in his version, as well as utilizing incredibly stiff camera work. The Spanish version, filmed on the same sets at the same time (Browning shot during the day, George Melford shot the Spanish version at night), fixes both those issues. Granted, the acting is a little cheesier in the Spanish version, but not by all that much.
"Boneshaker" by Cherie Priest - pure, unadulterated Steampunk goodness, perfectly written. highly recommended.
Ken Burns' "Jazz" on DVD - we own the other two parts of his American Trilogy, "The Civil War" and "Baseball", so we got around to renting this through netflix. of course, being a Burns documentary, it's very highly recommended. but at the end, i was pleased to realize that with the exception of be bop, avant-garde and some fusion, i like the vast majority of jazz a whole lot.
PBS "Empires: The Medici - Godfathers of the Renaissance" on DVD - it's amazing, looking at the history of the Medici family, just how apropos that title is. i was constantly surprised and enchanted by the lives they touched during the family's powerful years. very highly recommended.
The Austin Handbell Ensemble's Christmas Concert - once again, this talented group of Austin handbellers puts on a wonderful performance of Christmas classics and showed the audience (roughly 50% of whom were handbellers themselves) what could be done with the bells, given time, talent and lots of practice. we always enjoy their shows and this one was certainly no exception.
"Ninja Assassin" in theaters - we went looking for action porn and came home completely covered in warm, sticky action spooge. 'nuff said.
This next Saturday (the 19th) we're having an open house to celebrate my Beloved's 50th birthday (the 21st). We'll be open for visitors from noon till 10 PM, there'll be drinks and snacks and quite possibly a big pot of something simmering on the stove for more serious noshing. Anyone who wishes to is more than welcome to stop by and help her celebrate. Presents are not required. If you want to come and need directions, respond to this post and ask for 'em. |
